Story Behind Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan, the burning of the bonfire on the eve of Holi, has its roots in Hindu mythology as it also celebrates the triumph of good over evil. The tale of Prahlad and his wicked aunt Holika is associated with the legend of Holika Dahan.

As legend goes, King Hiranyakashipu was an extremely strong and egotistical king who believed he was all but invincible, and he commanded all the people in his kingdom to worship him. But his son, Prahlad, who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, declined to worship his father as god.

Angry with his son's constant devotion to Vishnu, Hiranyakashipu decided to punish him, but each time his guards threw him off a hill, Vishnu intervened to save him. The king, tired of this, then enlisted the aid of his sister Holika, who was immune to fire.

Hiranyakashipu, plotting to kill Prahlad, spontaneously deviced a plan and ordered Holika to sit on the lit fire with Prahlad on her lap. Holika was immune to Fire and felt assured she would come out alive! And that Prahlad would get killed.

But when the fire crackled, the unthinkable occurred.  Holika, a female demon, was immune to fire but perished in the flames with Prahlad, protected by God.

The triumph of good over evil, justice over treachery, this marks the occasion of this festival. When bonfire is lit, Holika Dahan symbolizes the victory of good over evil placing the destruction of evil and the saving of the good and truth. The burning of Holika on the night before Holi is a symbol of the destruction of evil and for a good over evil.
